Pediatric Dentist - Fluoride Treatment

in Honolulu, Hawaii

Despite scare tactics of some radical groups, fluoride treatment is a safe and effective treatment for the prevention of cavities in children and adults. The scaremongering is reminiscent of the insane ravings of General Jack D. Ripper in Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove, and can lead to real harm for children if parents are persuaded against seeking fluoride treatment for children at risk for dental cavities. Because it is important that you not unwittingly pass fear of treatment on to your child, here are the facts.

Research shows that fluoridation of water combined with the use of fluoride toothpastes has led to a 60% decline in dental cavities with no ill effects. However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has noted that with the wide range of fluoride treatments available—including toothpastes, mouth rinses, dietary supplements and fluoridated water—parents are at some risk of giving their children too much of a good thing.

According to the FDA, it is best to avoid using fluoridated water to mix baby formula, which might mean using either pre-made formula or using bottled water that explicitly states it contains no fluoride. Once your children are weaned off formula, it is encouraged that they drink fluoridated water. For children under six, carefully monitor their tooth brushing. Make sure they use only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste and do not swallow it. Consult with us before beginning any fluoride supplements or treatments for your child.

At General Dentistry for Children, our pediatric dentist use the latest proven method for applying fluoride to your child's teeth without risk. After cleaning your child's teeth, we apply a fluoride varnish to the teeth. The sticky varnish adheres to the teeth without any risk of swallowing or adverse contamination. This procedure has been shown to reduce cavities in children by fifty percent.

Fluoride treatment is an important part of your child's visit to the dentist and should not be neglected. If you have any concerns, Dr. Timon can put them to rest before your child's first visit.
